{"id":359,"date":"2010-09-14T17:18:50","date_gmt":"2010-09-14T23:18:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/triciakarsay.com\/guatemala\/?p=359"},"modified":"2010-09-14T17:18:50","modified_gmt":"2010-09-14T23:18:50","slug":"%c2%a1por-jorge-pienso-que-lo-tengo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/triciakarsay.com\/guatemala\/%c2%a1por-jorge-pienso-que-lo-tengo\/","title":{"rendered":"\u00a1Por Jorge, pienso que lo tengo!"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_338\" style=\"width: 452px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/triciakarsay.com\/guatemala\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/IMG_0564.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-338\" class=\"size-large wp-image-338   \" title=\"IMG_0564\" src=\"http:\/\/triciakarsay.com\/guatemala\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/IMG_0564-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"442\" height=\"294\" srcset=\"https:\/\/triciakarsay.com\/guatemala\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/IMG_0564-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/triciakarsay.com\/guatemala\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/IMG_0564-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 442px) 100vw, 442px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-338\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Las ni\u00f1as en el desfile<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Or should I say \u00a8By Carlos, I think I got it!\u00a8\u00a0 Who said living in the past wouldn\u00b4t pay off?\u00a0 Not only did I translate a passage from Spanish to English\u00a099.9% correctly (my use of <em>saber<\/em> and <em>querer<\/em> in\u00a0<em>el pret\u00e9rito<\/em> were a little off), I didn\u00b4t screw up one tense in my \u00a8What I did this weekend\u00a8 essay using both <em>el pret\u00e9rito y el imperfecto<\/em>!\u00a0 Sure I screwed up some other stuff, but who cares!?\u00a0\u00a0<em>Pobrecito <\/em>Carlos, he doesn\u00b4t know what to do with me sometimes.\u00a0 During an excercise this morning on the two past tenses, I had to translate sentences into Spanish and he kept pointing out other little\u00a0grammatical stuff that I got wrong, but I didn\u00b4t care because I was so excited that I got every single tense right AND knew the reason it was right.<\/p>\n<p>And today\u00b4s conversations were even better than yesterday\u00b4s.\u00a0 First of all, we spoke for two hours straight.\u00a0According to our\u00a0lesson plan\u00a0we\u00a0do an hour of conversation, then some reading and review of homework, and then he laughs at me and teases me about <em>mis errores<\/em> (yes, that\u00b4s part of the lesson plan!) and then a coffee break, but this morning we just kept talking and talking.\u00a0 And he may as well have been speaking English to me because I understood everything he said about his experiences with both the cruel official military and kinder guerrillas during the civil war inthe 80s.\u00a0 What he thinks about the power of education amongst the Maya (he is Mayan).\u00a0 We talked about his conspiracy theories\u00a0and I egged him on. \u00a0At least I think I did.\u00a0\u00a0But even more importantly, he understands me.\u00a0 Even when I\u00b4m trying to communicate difficult complex thoughts or philosophical points.\u00a0 Often, after my\u00a0long, slow\u00a0diatribes\u00a0in\u00a0response to\u00a0questions, statements and opinions,\u00a0I ask <em>\u00bfentiendes?<\/em> and he always does.\u00a0<em>\u00a8Perfectamente, Patricia.\u00a8<\/em>\u00a0 Miriam said this as well, but I thought she was just being nice or could infer what I meant from my choppy Spanish.\u00a0 But today was the first day I truly believed that I am being understood.
