What a sad day it is here.\u00a0 Rescuers are still finding bodies in numerous mudslides in different sections of the Inter-American highway.\u00a0 I believe the highest death toll is from the camioneta<\/em> accident near\u00a0Nahuala, which\u00a0is just outside Xela.\u00a0 My school planned a trip to a neighboring town today which was cancelled primarily due\u00a0to road blockage but also because of the potential danger.\u00a0 The school also advised us that it will continue to be extremely cautious about running trips outside of Xela.<\/p>\n

The weather is really unpredictable here.\u00a0 Today the sun was shining bright all afternoon and at exactly 5pm, torrential downpours soaked todas las calles<\/em>.\u00a0 I will continue to be careful about any travel I do outside of Xela, which I don\u00b4t think my current schedule will permit much else besides studying and working.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Despite the somber mood, my first day of class was\u00a0extremely successful.\u00a0 I should be writing en espa\u00f1ol en este momento<\/em> and my teacher, Miriam, would be very upset if she knew I was blogging en ingl\u00e9s<\/em>, but I\u00b4ll study en mi casa esta noche, despu\u00e9s de la cena<\/em>.\u00a0 Speaking of food, I had a yummy breakfast of\u00a0eggs, beans, tamalitos and warm-up conversation\u00a0with mi familia<\/em>.\u00a0 And for lunch, I had Guatemalan raviolis, which were kind of like manicotti filled with chopped meat.\u00a0 Yummmm.\u00a0\u00a0Okay, back to school. \u00a0I really like my teacher.\u00a0 Even though I did horribly on the assessment test (those damn verbos preterito y imperfecto<\/em>!), she still placed me somewhere between beginner and intermediate.\u00a0 Soy begmediate (<\/em>pronounced beg-MEE-dee-ah-tay).\u00a0<\/p>\n

Anyway, I understood most of what she was saying and she actually told me a sort of\u00a0chiste soucio,<\/em> and I got it!\u00a0 I was more impressed with that than she was.\u00a0 She told me another joke that I\u00a0understood, but didn\u00b4t really get. \u00a0I don\u00b4t even really get jokes in English.\u00a0 And I never remember them.\u00a0 We worked on verbs mostly today, because that really is my trouble area, but we were conversing in Spanish more than anything else, which I guess I\u00b4m better at than I think I am.\u00a0 We talked about\u00a0her other job, where we grew up, what I studied,\u00a0\u00a0how we both don\u00b4t want to work anymore\u00a0and where we can find rich husbands.\u00a0Really looking forward to ma\u00f1ana.<\/em>\u00a0 The activity today was rollerskating, and since I didn\u00b4t think that would really improve my Spanish and would most likely just improve my chances of ending up in a Guatemalan hospital, I skipped it and went to work instead, where I looked at more pictures of clowns and mimes.\u00a0 I just have two more years of archives to look through!\u00a0 I really understand the narrative of each performance just from looking at the photos and can\u00b4t wait to start designing pages.<\/p>\n
