There\u00b4s a woman from Vanderbilt University in Nashville who is also studying Spanish at Celas Maya and evaluating a clinic in Xela for university programs. She also works with Doctors Without Borders. \u00a0<em>Muy interesante.<\/em> We hit the tiny market in the park this morning to practice our <em>espa\u00f1ol <\/em>and I am really bummed now because I promised one of the vendors, Marta, that I would email pictures I took of her&#8230;first she asked if I would mail them to her and then she asked <em>\u00a8\u00bfcorreo electronico?\u00a8 S\u00ed, s\u00ed, es mas facil! <\/em>I have to say, I was quite surprised that this woman from a small <em>pueblo<\/em> outside of Xela had a hotmail account.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_175\" style=\"width: 624px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/triciakarsay.com\/guatemala\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/IMG_0333.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-175\" class=\"size-large wp-image-175 \" title=\"IMG_0333\" src=\"http:\/\/triciakarsay.com\/guatemala\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/IMG_0333-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"614\" height=\"409\" srcset=\"https:\/\/triciakarsay.com\/guatemala\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/IMG_0333-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/triciakarsay.com\/guatemala\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/IMG_0333-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 614px) 100vw, 614px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-175\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wandering around Xela, near 16 avenida y 1 calle<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Anyway, after the market, I went to meet <em>mi familia guatemalteco<\/em>. \u00a0Guadelupe picked me up at the school and we walked to her house. \u00a0Guadelupe lives with her daughter about a 10 minute walk away \u00a0in <em>zona 1<\/em>, in a lovely old house with a courtyard. \u00a0\u00a0Xela is a little like Riverdale, little mountains which really are a pleasure to walk unless you have 50 pounds of\u00a0<em>mochilla <\/em>weight on your back. \u00a0Oh yeah, did I mention that it started to rain as soon as Guadelupe picked me up from the school? \u00a0<em>Claro.<\/em> Got to the house, soaking wet, after chatting breathlessly <em>en espa\u00f1ol <\/em>all the way there.<\/p>\n<p>They have<em> un perrito llamada \u00a8Gordo\u00a8<\/em>and Guadelupe\u00b4s mother lives in an attached house next door. \u00a0I also met her sister Chicky. \u00a0I think that\u00b4s her name, I already forgot her daughter\u00b4s name. \u00a0It was all so rushed. \u00a0I also asked her to write her address down, which I will later sew into my raincoat, and show me where we were on the map because I really wasn\u00b4t paying attention and we all know how long I can stumble around in the rain and go absolutely nowhere. \u00a0Glad to report that I have been there and back already without getting lost so I\u00b4m definitely getting better at this direction thing.<\/p>\n<p>The small family is so inviting and my room is clean and comfortable. \u00a0Sunday is their day off, they just get me settled but starting tomorrow we will be eating all meals together and they will be helping me develop Spanish conversation skills. \u00a0And they call me <em>Pah-tee<\/em>. \u00a0I introduce myself as <em>Pah-tree-see-ya<\/em> to make it easier for everyone to pronounce my name (I get a lot of blank stares when I say <em>soy <\/em>Tricia). \u00a0 \u00a0But no one calls me <em>Pah-tree-see-ya. <\/em>They instantly shorten it to \u00a8Pot\u00a8or \u00a8Potty\u00a8. \u00a0 I feel like I\u00b4m in Junior High School all over again (wink wink to Tammy, Fran and Gerard). \u00a0They are so sweet, I\u00b4ll just let them call me whatever they want to.<\/p>\n<p>I do think I may be the same age as Guadelupe\u00b4s mother, who gave me the biggest hug and told she is going to see me every day. \u00a0Okay, I may be exaggerating&#8230;I\u00b4m probably the same age as Guadelupe or maybe a little older. \u00a0I\u00b4ll find out everyone\u00b4s age and life story ma\u00f1ana, at breakfast.<\/p>\n<p>Happy Labor Day <em>mis amigos norteamericanos<\/em>!<\/p>\n<p><em>P.S. \u00a0If anyone has read anything about the mudslides in this area, yes, it\u00b4s true, there have been some awful accidents, one in particular that I read about today about a bus leaving Xela for Solola. \u00a0Just so no one worries, I wouldn\u00b4t travel anywhere in that kind of weather and I\u00b4m pretty sure downtown Xela itself is quite removed from those areas.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8230;we hit the tiny market in the park this morning to practice our espa\u00f1ol.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[7],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-234","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-studying-spanish"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/triciakarsay.com\/guatemala\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/234","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/triciakarsay.com\/guatemala\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/triciakarsay.com\/guatemala\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/triciakarsay.com\/guatemala\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/triciakarsay.com\/guatemala\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=234"}],"version-history":[{"count":11,"href":"https:\/\/triciakarsay.com\/guatemala\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/234\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":245,"href":"https:\/\/triciakarsay.com\/guatemala\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/234\/revisions\/245"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/triciakarsay.com\/guatemala\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=234"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/triciakarsay.com\/guatemala\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=234"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/triciakarsay.com\/guatemala\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=234"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
