{"id":1780,"date":"2016-09-27T02:45:28","date_gmt":"2016-09-27T08:45:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/triciakarsay.com\/guatemala\/?p=1780"},"modified":"2016-09-27T05:46:34","modified_gmt":"2016-09-27T11:46:34","slug":"2016-a-greek-odyssey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/triciakarsay.com\/guatemala\/2016-a-greek-odyssey\/","title":{"rendered":"2016: A Greek Odyssey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" id=\"nyt_video_player\" style=\"float: right; margin-left: 20px; margin-top: 10px; margin-bottom: 20px;\" title=\"New York Times Video - Embed Player\" src=\"https:\/\/static01.nyt.com\/video\/players\/offsite\/index.html?videoId=100000001417458\" width=\"450\" height=\"280\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><br \/>\nI sat next to a man named Odysseus on the plane. &#8220;Oh-deh-SAY-oos&#8221; in Greece, probably &#8220;George&#8221; in Brooklyn, &#8220;Ulysses&#8221; in Dublin. \u00a0I don&#8217;t think I had ever met\u00a0anyone with an ancient Greek name until my friend named her children the beautiful names Aias and Danae. \u00a0 My sister also has a beautiful Greek name, but it&#8217;s not ancient. \u00a0I&#8217;m pretty sure I don&#8217;t know anyone named Zeus or Poseidon or Achilles, or even Athena. Although now I&#8217;m singing that Who song. \u00a0Okay, I probably know a Helen, but anyway. \u00a0Odysseus probably thought my over-enthusiastic reaction to his name was wine-induced or the result of overstimulation from mile-high electronic technology, but it really wasn&#8217;t. \u00a0I&#8217;m intentionally ON\u00a0one of the islands that Odysseus traveled to thousands of years ago in Homer&#8217;s<em>\u00a0Odyssey,\u00a0<\/em>perhaps even the home he so longed to return to! \u00a0These island have been on my radar for years after studying\u00a0both the <em>Iliad<\/em> and <em>Odyssey<\/em>\u00a0in college, and after taking one of my favorite electives, Homeric Archaeology. \u00a0I also worked with two boys on Paros in the 90s that were from these Kefalonia and Zakynthos, Nikos and Aris (respectively) Wait&#8230;Aristotelis! That&#8217;s Aristotle, an ancient name, I do know someone! \u00a0I also read\u00a0an article in the Times a few years ago which inspired me once again to really visit and go Homer hopping. \u00a0It was on my list the last time I was in Europe, but ended up changing plans.\u00a0 Anyway, take a look at this short video, it&#8217;s very interesting! Good article too http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/03\/11\/opinion\/sunday\/kristof-odysseus-lies-here.html. \u00a0Hope I can\u00a0find that\u00a0farmer&#8230;and a translator!<\/p>\n<p>Such a great word. Odyssey. \u00a0It embodies the fantastic, while retaining elements of the ordinary and practical. \u00a0So meeting a man called Odysseus at the beginning of one of my mini-odysseys was even more exciting than finding a socket under my seat (they are not always there, you know). \u00a0He was returning home after only two years, but coming home\u00a0he was.<\/p>\n<p>I always feel like I&#8217;m coming home when landing in Athens. \u00a0And no homecoming\u00a0to Greece is complete for me without seeing Zeta and Panagiotis and Aias and Danae! \u00a0It truly is wonderful to visit them. \u00a0And no matter how short the visit, I treasure the chance to see how much the children have grown, reminisce about our days on Paros and plan for future visits. \u00a0We had a lovely 24 hours, minus about 9 hours of sleeping, that started at the airport and ended at the bus station (efharisto poli, agapimenoi!) And\u00a0no nap! \u00a0I had very little sleep on the flight, I forced myself to stay up until at least 11 to try and whip jet lag&#8217;s ass&#8230;it worked!\u00a0 I slept really well and deeply and If you are interested Notify me so i will come to pick you with car..<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As much as I would love to wander in at 5pm (10am NYC time) after a day of sailing, drinking, swimming and eating, the 49 year old me is a little more responsible than let&#8217;s say the 48 year old me would have been. That&#8217;s the thing about odysseys, they are filled with detours and longing and sacrifice.
