{"id":130,"date":"2010-08-31T20:10:11","date_gmt":"2010-09-01T02:10:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/triciakarsay.com\/guatemala\/?p=130"},"modified":"2010-09-01T18:40:35","modified_gmt":"2010-09-02T00:40:35","slug":"estoy-aqui-perdida-y-cansada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/triciakarsay.com\/guatemala\/estoy-aqui-perdida-y-cansada\/","title":{"rendered":"Estoy aqu\u00ed, perdida y cansada"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mceTemp\">Travel was really smooth.\u00a0 Made connection in San Salvador, no problem, bag didn\u00b4t get lost, even though the international airport in Guatemala City blew a transformer yesterday leaving the entire airport with no electricity.\u00a0 I\u00b4m still not entirely sure how planes are landing.\u00a0 Anyway, couldn\u00b4t believe how quickly I got on a bus\u00a0in Guatemala City headed for Quetaltenango (a.k.a. Xela, <em>pron. shay-la,<\/em> shortened from the Quich\u00e9 Mayan <em>Xelaju<\/em>).\u00a0 As soon as we left the sunny valley, torrential rain and a cold breeze followed us through the trip, but we still made it up here in 4 hours.<\/div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">Studying my map, I figured I\u00b4d have no problem finding my way from the Pullman bus station (I was too tired to deal with the sensory overload of a <em>camioneta<\/em>).\u00a0 Since Xela is based on a grid,\u00a0I was sure that even on my most directionally-impaired\u00a0day, I\u00b4d be able to navigate this new small city without getting lost.\u00a0\u00a0 Yeah, right.\u00a0 I\u00b4m not sure when I became so deluded\u00a0in thinking that\u00a0I ever really know where I\u00b4m going.\u00a0\u00a0I may have gotten a bit cocky when I figured out that \u00a8north\u00a8 doesn\u00b4t mean \u00a8whatever\u00a0direction that\u00a0is in front of you\u00a8.\u00a0\u00a0 In Xela, a<em>venidas<\/em> run north-south and <em>calles<\/em> run east-west.\u00a0 Trouble is I had no idea what <em>avenida<\/em> or <em>calle<\/em> I was on.\u00a0 Sometimes I would think I was on a <em>calle<\/em> but was really on an <em>avenida<\/em>&#8230;and forget about z<em>ona<\/em> 1 and z<em>ona <\/em>3.\u00a0 <em>Quisiera saber donde\u00a0est\u00e1<\/em> <em>zona <\/em>2???<\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_136\" style=\"width: 452px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/triciakarsay.com\/guatemala\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/IMG_0281.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Restaurante en 12a Avenida y 3a Calle<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Anyway, I walked around for two hours in the wrong <em>zona<\/em>, on the wrong <em>avenida<\/em> looking for the wrong <em>calle<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0In the rain.\u00a0 Finally a taxi driver approached the hopelessly lost version of me and directed me to the area I wanted to be in, which I\u00a0definitely\u00a0WAS NOT in.\u00a0 \u00a0I understood his Spanish directions perfectly and finally ended up near the\u00a0<em>Parque Centroam\u00e9rica,<\/em> where I found a clean hotel for $6\/night&#8211;Hotel Moriani, on 12a <em>avenida<\/em> y 2a <em>calle<\/em> (or is it 2a <em>avenida<\/em> y 12 <em>calle<\/em>?)<\/p>\n<p>After dropping my bags, I set out to figure out this crazy grid system and got lost again.\u00a0 I\u00b4m\u00a0blaming it on being really, really tired and really, really hungry, because even I couldn\u00b4t be this confused.\u00a0 When I finally found my street again, I decided to stick to a three block straight line from it, making sure I could at least see the corner of the block where my hotel is.\u00a0 Found a cute little restaurant that served traditional Xela dishes, had some <em>pepi\u00e1n de pollo con tamalitos y sopa,<\/em> yuuummmmm, then came to this cafe to post.\u00a0 Yes, I can still see my hotel from
